NBA All-Star Weekend (Day 2)

I barely have time to write as we have had so many great events, including wheelchair basketball and several NBA Fit events.

Yesterday was strange — we got 12 inches of snow! Dikembe Mutombo and I were stuck in traffic for 3.5 hours! We only went about 10 miles! The good news is that I got to know Dikembe and I am so impressed with him!

He is so humble and has such a wonderful positive outlook on life. He has built a hospital in Africa with his own money and he continues to be involved in Atlanta and around the globe. Unfortunately the media covers the negative things the players do but the reality is there are far more current and former players like Dikembe who do wonderful things in their communities.

NBA All-Star Weekend (Day 1) Featuring Laura Bush

I have been going non-stop since I got here to Dallas! We have had a number of events the past couple of days.

A real highlight was our NBA Cares event with Laura Bush. Bob Lanier and I co-hosted the event. (And it was a really cool to be able to address the former First Lady...)

We dedicated a new library at Ferrell Elementary School in Dallas. Since Mrs. Bush is a former librarian and is passionate about literacy in this country, she was a perfect fit for the event. She was extremely kind and delivered a very graceful and articulate message encouraging the kids to read. I was fortunate to have been able to meet her and talk to her for a bit. She was wonderful.

20th Anniversary of Stanford's 1990 Championship

This past weekend my teammates and I were honored for the 20th anniversary of our 1990 NCAA Championship. It started with an incredible dinner, party, and we were recognized by a great crowd at the Stanford-USC game. It is hard to imagine it has been 20 years since we won the title!

Eight members of our team, three of our coaches, support staff, and Andy Geiger our Athletic Director were there — we had not all been together since we won in 1990. Many of our group flew across the country to celebrate.

I am not one to reminisce about past success, but I must admit I had a lot of fun seeing everyone! It was as if no time had passed! I am amazed at all of the wonderful things my teammates are doing now. They are doctors, teachers, coaches, executives, entrepreneurs, moms, lawyers, and best of all great friends after all of these years.


Sports really do bring us together and I can’t think of a better group of women and men to have traveled the journey to the 1990 Championship and beyond. Tara VanDerveer and Amy Tucker, who are still coaches at Stanford, have created a legacy that continues to live within each team since our championship season.

I am so blessed to have been surrounded by such outstanding people! And I continue to be amazed by the success of Stanford Women’s Basketball... I look forward to seeing this Stanford team at the Final Four in San Antonio!

A Great Weekend With Dad

My Dad and I went to Sea Ranch last weekend. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth! There are 10 miles of trails along the rocky California Coast. It truly takes my breath away! We had a great time walking and talking and just relaxing. There are no TV’s and internet access and cell service are sparse, which forces a true getaway. It is nature at its best!
